GIL KANE: EL ARTISTA VA Y VIENE… PERO SU ARTE PERMANECE

El  primer contacto que tuve durante mi infancia con el mundo de los comics se debió gracias a las revistas que eran publicadas por la actualmente extinta Editorial Novaro. Títulos como Superman (que también publicaba las historias de la Legión de Super-Héroes), Batman (con historias del murciélago, Linterna Verde, Flash y Los Campeones de la Justicia), Domingos Alegres (Dr. Solar, Turok, MagnusPerdidos en el Espacio, Supercar y La Dimensión Desconocida, entre otros), Titanes Planetarios (con series de ciencia ficción de Editorial DC), Epopeya, Joyas de la Mitología, Cuentos de Walt Disney, Archie, Supercomic, El Conejo de la Suerte, Lorenzo y Pepita, Tom y Jerry, Tarzan de los Monos, El Pájaro Loco, Roy Rogers y otras tanta publicaciones colmaban de felicidad y aventura esas horas de la infancia en que mi mamá me hacía dormir la siesta aunque yo no lo quisiera.

Entre esa multitud de dibujos (de los cuales no tenía ni la menor idea de quienes eran sus autores) descollaba uno que, de manera inmediata, suscitó mi atención. El dinamismo impuesto en cada una de sus viñetas y la espectacularidad de las escenas dibujadas (ya fueran estas en una ciudad o en el espacio exterior) lograron que amara aún más a esos comics que iban cayendo en mis ávidas manos.

La historieta en cuestión era Green Lantern/Linterna Verde y el dibujante que tanto había admirado era nada menos que el gran Gil Kane.

Este eximio artista nació en la ciudad de Riga (Letonia) el 6 de Abril del año 1926. Cuando tenía tan solo 3 años de edad se mudó con su familia a Brooklyn (Nueva York) y estudió en la School of Industrial Art (que más tarde sería conocida como High School of Art and Desing). Mientras continuaba con sus estudios comenzó a realizar trabajos menores como asistente de algunos dibujantes.

Su labor como profesional del comic dio inicio en 1942, cuando comenzó a trabajar en MLJ, la agencia perteneciente a Jack Binder. Allí realizaría sus primeros trabajos: Inspector Bentley of Scotland Yard (Pep Comics) y The Shield and Dusty.

Durante el periodo bélico conocido como la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Kane trabajó en diferentes editoriales, entre ellas Timely Comics en donde llegaría a conocer a Jack Kirby y Joe Simon. Luego de haberse enlistado en el ejército para la campaña del Pacífico, volvió al ruedo utilizando varios seudónimos, su auténtico nombre era Eli Katz, entre ellos “Pen Star” (léanlo de corrido y vean lo feo que es) y “Gil Stack” (otro nombre tan feo como el anterior). Afortunadamente se quedó con el de Gil Kane que le sentaba de maravillas.

Su entrada en la Edad de Plata de los comics de superhéroes no pudo haber sido más propicia. En la Editorial DC, para la que venía trabajando desde la década del 50, se encargó de realizar ilustraciones para muchos de los personajes  de la Golden Age que había sido revitalizados por esos tiempos, encargándose incluso de rediseñar algunos de ellos, entre los que podemos nombrar a Green Lantern, Atom, Los Jóvenes Titanes y Hawk and Dove. También trabajó para Marvel en la revista Tales to Astonish con el seudónimo de Scott Edward.

Bajo ese mismo nombre realizó T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents para la editorial Tower Comics y Tiger Boy para Harvey. Posteriormente se transformaría en artista regular de la serie The Amazing Spider-Man, en reemplazo de John Romita, en donde se destacaría (junto a Stan Lee) por el desarrollo de algunas historias bastante controvertidas como la mención del uso de drogas y la recordada muerte de Gwen Stacy, la novia del trepamuros, en manos del temible Duende Verde.

También tuvo la oportunidad de realizar trabajos independientes, los cuales se destacaron por su inmensa calidad gráfica. Entre ellos podemos nombrar His Name is… Savage (Adventure House Press) junto al guionista Archie Godwin, Blackmark (Bantam Books) la que sería considerada la primera novela gráfica en ser publicada en los EE.UU, Star Hawk, una tira de prensa realizada junto a Ron Goulart, y El Anillo de los Nibelungos, una adaptación de la opera creada por Richard Wagner.
Hablar de los aportes de Gil Kane al mercado de comics nos llevaría toda una eternidad, pero la particular forma de realizar sus dibujos descollan muy por encima de muchos artistas de esos tiempos. Ello se debe a varios factores creativos que lo hacen totalmente único y reconocible entre los fans. 



Sus personajes son sumamente dinámicos y no atados al cuadro que los contiene. Los demoledores golpes lanzados tantos por los héroes como por los villanos son espectacularmente cinematográficos... y realmente duelen . Sus líneas son claras y bien definidas, mostrándonos con igual profesionalismo ciudades, bosques, dinosaurios, pueblos del salvaje oeste, monstruos, paisajes extraterrestres y alienígenas que resultan totalmente creíbles. Quizá lo más destacado de todo su trabajo son esas soberbias perspectivas forzadas que tienen la virtud de hacernos sentir de manera cabal la profundidad de la escena en la cual se está desarrollando la desbordante acción.


 

 
 


 
Sin su creatividad gráfica el Green Lantern de Tierra 2 (Alan Scott) no hubiera resurgido en el mundo moderno ni los Green Lantern Corps hubieran cruzado las profundidades del espacio… de eso no tengo la menor duda.

A las puertas del siglo XXI, más precisamente el 31 de enero del 2000, el espíritu creativo del gran Gil Kane se elevó por sobre las nimiedades propias de los mortales para lograr acceder al vasto panteón de los grandes creativos que supieron hacer de mi infancia un muy grato recuerdo.
